With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you are probably making plans now for the big holidays, from who will attend your feast to what you will prepare. As you plan for this classic American celebration, consider these top five ways to spend your Thanksgiving holiday and avoid a personal injury in McAlester.

The November holiday would not be complete without a Thanksgiving feast. As you plan your meal and prepare it with your family and friends, be sure to use safe food preparation and cooking techniques, such as:

  • Thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, not on the counter.
  • Keep sharp knives away from youngsters.
  • Never leave the house with the oven or stove on.
  • Keep little ones out of the kitchen, especially away from the oven and stove to prevent burn injuries.

AtlanticTraining also reminds Thanksgiving hosts to ensure that their smoke alarms are working.

If you will be traveling this holiday like many other people in Oklahoma and across the country, make sure you do so safely. Plan your route in advance, and make sure your car has been serviced prior to long trips. When driving through traffic and over long distances, be sure to rest when needed, and put distractions away.

Planning to enjoy a beverage or two during your Thanksgiving celebration? If you do, be sure to spend the night at your host’s home or get a ride back to your own place with a sober driver. According to a blog published by SafeAuto, Thanksgiving is notoriously one of the deadliest holidays for drivers in America as a result of increased traffic on the road, nighttime driving, impaired driving, and navigating unfamiliar roads.

The holidays are a great time to visit loved ones in nursing homes, as well as those who may have to spend the holiday at a hospital. During your visit, check in with your loved one regarding their experience and level of care they are receiving, and keep an eye out for any signs of neglect or abuse.

Food and family are not the only things that characterize the Thanksgiving holiday. Football is at the top of the list, too. If you’ll be participating in a family and friends football game this year, be sure to keep it friendly. Opt for flag football instead of tackle, and make sure everyone knows the rules. Traumatic brain injuries and other injuries can result from falling or being tackled, so be careful and seek medical care if an injury does occur.
